Ultimate Guide to Choosing Your Sleeping Bag & Sleeping Pad - Ratings Explained

Planning an outdoor adventure is always exciting, especially when buying new camping gear.

Having the right sleeping bag and mattress can make or break your experience, so it's essential to understand all the technical specifications of the products you're purchasing.

Naturehike knows it can be daunting to determine which specifications are best suited to you, so we’ve compiled this guide to unpack what the equipment “tech specs” and ratings mean.

Understanding Temperature Ratings

One of the most critical factors in choosing a sleeping bag is its temperature rating.

At Naturehike, we provide three ratings:

Comfort Rating:

The temperature at which the average sleeper will feel comfortable. For example, the T180 model has a comfort rating of 3°C, making it ideal for spring and autumn.

Limit Rating:

The lowest temperature at which the bag can keep you warm. The T230, with a limit rating of -7°C, is perfect for colder autumn and winter nights.

Extreme Rating:

The survival limit is not recommended for regular use because this is the lowest temperature at which the bag will keep you alive. This rating is for emergency survival situations only.

Top Tip: Always choose a sleeping bag with a comfort rating slightly lower than the coldest temperature you expect to encounter.

Understanding R-Value for Sleeping Pads

Before we get into the nitty-gritty of the values, we must first understand what exactly an R-value is.

R-value scientifically measures how well a material resists heat flow. The higher the R-value, the better it keeps warmth in and cold out.

For sleeping mats, the R-value shows how well they keep you warm by blocking cold from the ground. A higher R-value means better insulation. For example, a sleeping pad with an R-value of 4.0 will keep you warmer than one with an R-value of 1.5.

Remember: Higher R-value= better insulation, and Lower R-value= less insulation.

This is important because if your sleeping pad’s R-rating isn't high enough, you will get cold as a result of less insulation.

The Best R-Value Rating for You

R-Value 0.5 to 2.0 – Warm

If you're camping in warm weather with temperatures above 10°C at night, a sleeping mat with an R-value between 1.0 and 1.5 will be enough to keep you comfortable.

R-Value 2.0 to 3.5 – Cool

These sleeping pads work well for most camping trips. An R-value between 2.0 and 3.5 can keep you warm in temperatures as low as 5°C.

R-Value 3.5 to 5.0 – Cold

For colder conditions where temperatures drop to freezing or slightly below, choose a sleeping pad with an R-value between 4.0 and 5.0 to stay warm through the night.

R-Value 5.0+ – Extreme

If you're camping in high-altitude or icy conditions, you'll need a sleeping pad with an R-value above 5.0. These mats are designed for extreme cold, often using special insulation like heat-reflective foil or closed-cell foam to trap warmth.

Dimensions vs. Packed Dimensions

When browsing our sleeping bag product pages, you'll notice two sets of dimensions:

Dimensions:

This refers to the size of the sleeping bag when fully unpacked. For instance, the T180 measures (1900 + 300) x 800/680mm, offering ample space for taller individuals.

Packed Dimensions:

This indicates how small the sleeping bag can be compressed for travel. The T180 packs down to 280 x 280 x 450mm, which results in it being easy to carry on hiking trips.

Understanding these measurements ensures you select a sleeping bag that fits your body and your backpack.

Material Matters

The material of your sleeping bag and mattress affects its warmth, toughness, and comfort.

Naturehike’s sleeping bag range uses high-quality materials like:

  • Polyester: Lightweight and durable against the elements, ideal for outdoor use.

  • Washed Cotton: Soft and breathable, perfect for avoiding sweaty nights.

  • Down Cotton: Provides excellent insulation, keeping you warm in colder climates.

  • Sponge Filling: Adds softness and insulation for those who prioritise a good night’s sleep.

  • FIll Options: You have a choice between goose down and duck down. Choose goose down if you want lighter, warmer insulation and are willing to pay more. Opt for duck down if you're looking for a more affordable option and don't mind a bit of extra weight.

Our materials are carefully chosen to balance performance and comfort, ensuring a good night's sleep in any season.

Additional Features

Naturehike sleeping bags come with features designed to enhance your outdoor experience:

  • Convertible Design: Some models, like the T180, can be opened completely or connected to another sleeping bag for couples.

  • Cowl for Added Warmth: Extra insulation around the neck area keeps you cosy in chilly weather.
